The Kids Alive pantomime has been one of the biggest touring free shows in Australia.  Not only did the show visit metropolitan areas, but to date has visited 545 country towns, 44 remote communities and played to more than 225,000 students Australia wide.

Gin Gin CrewGin Gin primary school teacher Jane Stehben’s wouldn’t take no for an answer. So she rallied the local Gin Gin community together to help bring the Kids Alive – do the five water safety message to town.

Together with the high school performing arts teacher Shaun Norden, they guided the Gin Gin high school students to take ownership and craft their own show which they would perform to the community. In fact many of the high school students who performed the show had seen the show 10 years previously.

After 3 months of rehearsals the show was ready. The Gin Gin community responded and the Bendigo Bank Community Bank® bussed in primary school students from the outlying districts to enjoy the day.

On stage Gin GinOn show day the performing arts hall rocked for 3 hours, as the high school students performed 3 professional and energetic shows to more than 350 children.

The adjacent sports hall was also alive with and buzzing with water safety activities to keep the children interested while they waited for the show to start. The fire brigade truck and local ambulance were in action demonstrating CPR and emergency procedures. The Royal Life Saving had a display on water safety. There were arts and crafts for the children to complete. The Kids Alive costume characters Boo, Wise Owl and Lifesaver Lil were mingling with the children, and the Kids Alive animations were being played on the big screen.

A great day was had by all. Hats off to Jane and Shaun who made this day happen. Congratulations to the high school kids who delivered such a professional show.

Kids Alive has 15 costume characters that we can share with the community for free. Please send us an email if you’re interested.

More info about the show

Created to teach kids the five steps to water safety, Laurie Lawrence’s Kids Alive show has a colourful cast of characters including Lifesaver Lil, Wise Owl and naughty Boo.

The show conveys the Kids Alive – Do the five water safety message by performing the tale of Boo, a naughty alien who does not believe in water safety. One day boo falls into the pool and he doesn’t know how to swim.  Luckily, Wise Owl and Lifesaver Lil were supervising and knew resuscitation to save him.

Laurie said, “There is nothing better than seeing the kids enjoy the show because while they are singing the songs and dancing to the music they are learning the Kids Alive – Do the five message. You cannot underestimate how much information children, even at a very early age can absorb. Teaching them the simple Kids Alive steps to water safety is crucial in arming them against childhood drowning. Once children learn the message, they even teach their younger siblings, parents and grandparents”.

The songs from the Pantomime include catchy tunes:
