Kids Alive – Partners
Laurie Lawrence/Kids Alive and PoolWerx team up to make a splash about water safety from September 2013
Former Australian swimming coach and water safety ambassador Laurie Lawrence is joining forces with national pool and spa care franchise Poolwerx in an effort to improve pool safety education and prevent preschool drownings.
The school holidays will form the diving block for the partnership between Kids Alive – Do the Five and Poolwerx, with the official media launch taking place in Brisbane on Wednesday, 25 September 2013.
The partnership will boost Laurie’s 25-year-long campaign by utilising the 300 Poolwerx franchisees to reach out to Australians with educational DVDs, pool safety checklists and through education at ongoing pool and spa care appointments.
Laurie Lawrence said this year would be the most significant to date for Kids Alive.
“We are teaming up with Poolwerx to take our ‘Kids Alive – Do the Five’ message to thousands of adults and children across the country, targeting the area where water safety is absolutely critical – in our own backyards,” he said.
“We want the simple steps people can take to reduce the risk of a tragedy or near tragedy to become part of everyday Australian lifestyle, and Poolwerx provides the perfect platform to support us with its wide footprint across the country.”
Poolwerx CEO John O’Brien said Poolwerx was committed to promoting water safety awareness.
“Despite boasting the highest pool ownership per capita in the world, Australians still ignore simple safety measures including regular inspection for pool dangers, displaying an up-to-date CPR chart and understanding basic life saving techniques,” he said.
“This Kids Alive campaign is a collective effort and something we’re all passionate about. Our franchises are committed to driving water safety education through our stores, service vans and as part of our community outreach.”
Laurie urged all Australians to check their pool safety before taking the plunge into the swimming season.
“Now is the perfect time to ensure your pool area is safe and ready to use by checking the fence is intact and the gate and latch are in working order. If you’re not sure, ask a professional,” he said.

Laurie and Kids Alive have had a long and productive association with Australian design and manufacturing company D&D Technologies.
The Sydney-based family company invented the MagnaLatch® Child Safety Gate Latch in the 1990s, and now exports its innovative gate latches, locks and hinges around the world. The now-iconic MagnaLatch® is found on most swimming pool gates, childcare centres and many house and garden gates across the country.
When D&D Technologies was looking for a suitable ambassador to help promote its multi-award-winning products in the late 1990s they approached Laurie, not just because of his high profile in swimming, sport and motivation, but also because of his earnest work in reducing preventable toddler drownings in backyard pools. D&D Technologies and Kids Alive share this heartfelt mission.
The synergy between Laurie and D&D could not be more obvious. Laurie, who loves the idea of supporting Aussie-grown product, let alone livesaving ones, lends his knowledge, expertise and voice to D&D’s marketing of its gate safety hardware, and D&D Technologies provides substantial support to Kids Alive and everything it stands for.

Puddle Pics are the official photographers for Kids Alive – Do the Five
Hi my name is Joanne Slaughter and I started Puddle Pics six years ago after I discovered the sport of scuba diving and worked as an underwater photographer in the dive industry.
I was introduced to the idea of photographing children underwater when my first daughter Kayla was born. The positive reaction I received of her underwater photos was so overwhelming that I realized there was a growing demand for children’s professional underwater photography.
Puddle Pics Photographers use state of the art underwater camera equipment and lightning to ensure our customers receive high quality photos.
I believe that with the digital age upon us it is important for our customers to have digital copies of their photos. This allows them full flexibility to share their photos with family and friends through a variety of digital media.
Six years on we now service over 100-swim schools in Sydney and have sold to over 50,000 parents.
My goal is to provide a safe, fun and professional underwater photography service to all my business partners and general customers. Our competitive prices ensure that this unique service is available to everyone who loves swimming and having fun in the water.
