Be Extra Diligent This Long Weekend

As we gear up for the final long weekend of summer, Kids Alive is here to remind you about the importance of staying safe around water. Tragically, 68 lives have already been lost to drowning since December 1. That’s a 15% increase compared to the five-year average, and with a month of summer still ahead, it’s vital we all take extra care to look after our loved ones.


While we have to be diligent anytime we are around water – we need to be aware that 40% of drownings happening between 12 PM and 6 PM. Public holidays and weekends, like the upcoming Australia Day long weekend, are high-risk periods, making vigilance more important than ever.


Watch Your Mate

Once again, we are launching “Watch Your Mate”. A program to remind us about the vital role supervision plays in preventing drowning. Whether you’re at a pool, beach, or river this weekend, always keep watch and never underestimate the importance of supervision.

5 Water Safety Tips for the Long Weekend

  1. Supervise Closely – Keep a constant eye on children around water. No distractions.
  2. Swim Between the Flags – At the beach, always swim in patrolled areas for extra safety.
  3. Wear a Life Jacket – Particularly during boating or water sports.
  4. Check the Conditions – Be aware of the environment before entering the water.
  5. Know CPR – Being prepared can make all the difference in an emergency.
