Every hour, every day, more than 40 people lose their lives to drowning. 372,000 people drown each year, with those under 5 years old at greatest risk. Globally, over half of all drowning deaths are under 25 years old. Drowning is the 3rd leading cause of unintentional injury death, accounting for 7% of all injury-related deaths. (World Health Organization, 2016).
Australia’s water safety guru Laurie Lawrence, is getting behind International Water Safety Day and visiting Blue Dolphin Swim Centre in Adelaide’s Happy Valley. Laurie believes that local swim schools are the best place for parents to go to find out how to keep their child safe in and around water. Laurie said “Get down to your local swim school and become educated on swimming and water safety. Learning to swim, coupled with continual education on water safety messages can save lives.”
Lawrence’s Kids Alive Do The Five program is funded by the Australian Government. To educate Australian parents Laurie has just released a new book Living with Water which is distributed free to parents via the New Mothers Bounty Bag.
