My 2 year old climbs a pool fence
Here is a question we received from a parent that we would like to share with everyone.
Question:
Hi, I’m concerned pool fences aren’t high enough, my 2 year old can climb over the metal ones. Can you let me know any authorities I can contact about this. I’ve recorded him doing it if you are interested in seeing the video.
Answer:
Thank you for your email. We can understand your alarm and you’re not alone. Many children in this age group can climb pool fences. For this reason we recommend the following to parents,
– remove any objects from around the pool that can assist children in climbing the fence e.g. outdoor furniture, toys, pot plants.
– set up a routine for going into the pool including collecting swim wear, towels, goggles and toys to play with. Don’t let your child strip off and swim in the nudie make sure they wear their swim wear. This routine will help parents identify when their Child wants to go swimming.
– make sure you are practicing swimming and water safety skills and encouraging independent swimming from your child. E.g. how to get in and out of the pool safely, returning to the pool ledge, edge or stairs and back floating and recovery skills.
– always get in the water and swim with your child so that they know they must always swim with mum or dad and then you can supervise within arms reach.
Remember do the five. Fence the pool, shut the gate, teach your kids to swim it’s great, supervise watch your mate and learn how to resuscitate!
Thanks
