Tropical Cyclone Alfred
To all our friends in South East Queensland, stay safe as Tropical Cyclone Alfred makes landfall this week. This weather event will bring heavy rain, strong winds, and flooding, creating hidden dangers around the home—especially for young children. With schools and daycares closed, kids will be spending more time at home, increasing the risk of accidents in and around water.
Even if you’re not near the coast, floodwaters and heavy rain can turn everyday objects into drowning hazards. Bathtubs, buckets, wheelbarrows, and outdoor toys can quickly fill up with water, creating unexpected risks. Here are a few tips to keep safety top of mind.
5 Water Safety Tips During a Cyclone
Empty & Store – Buckets, bins, and containers can collect rainwater fast. Empty them regularly and store them upside down or away. If you are collecting water in case of an emergency, ensure it is in an area away from where children will be or cannot access. In your pool area behind a fence for example.
- Secure Outdoor Items – Trampolines, play equipment, and even garden tools can become hazards in high winds or flooding. Tie them down or bring them inside.
- Supervise Constantly – With more water around, and potential flooding young kids can be at risk in seconds. Keep them close and supervise at all times.
- Avoid Floodwaters – Never let kids play near or in floodwaters. Currents can be stronger than they appear, and hidden debris can be dangerous.
- Be Ready to Act – In an emergency, knowing CPR can save a life. Refresh your knowledge and make sure you have emergency contacts handy.
Cyclones can be unpredictable, but water safety doesn’t have to be. Stay alert, secure your home, and make supervision a priority.
Stay safe and dry.
